Public AI Fellow (Japan)

Location: Tokyo, Japan
Commitment: Deliverable-based, and then part-time
Compensation: 5,000 USD stipend

We are seeking a dynamic and mission-driven Public AI Fellow based in Japan to support research and relationship-building efforts around Japan's national AI strategy and ecosystem. This fellow will play a key role in laying the groundwork for Airbus for AI—an ambitious initiative to build a frontier AI lab across middle-power countries.

You will:

  • Produce an actionable report into Japan’s AI ecosystem, national priorities, and industrial policy landscape.
  • Build trust and support relationship development across Japan’s public sector, national R&D labs, and AI industry.
  • Help align Japanese interests with a broader international coalition focused on public AI.
  • Provide cultural and political advice to support consortium-building efforts.

You might be a fit if you have:

  • Bicultural fluency in Japanese and English—both linguistically and culturally.
  • A degree from a top Japanese university (e.g. University of Tokyo, Kyoto, Keio, Waseda) or equivalent standing in policy or technical fields. Bonus if you also have a degree from abroad.
  • Familiarity with Japan’s tech, policy, and/or research communities—or the social intelligence to engage with and grow such a network.
  • A keen interest in AI, geopolitics, public infrastructure, or the future of technology governance.
    Bonus if you have experience in diplomacy, international tech collaborations, foundation models, or national AI strategies of Japan or other G7 countries.

This is an opportunity to shape Japan’s role in a high-level international initiative, and gain a front-row seat to global AI diplomacy and infrastructure strategy. You’ll work with a powerful network of international technologists, policymakers, and public interest organizations.

業務内容:

  • 日本のAIエコシステム、国家的優先事項、産業政策の状況について、実用的なレポートを作成する
  • 日本の政府機関、国立研究所、AI関連産業との関係構築を支援する
  • 日本の国益と、パブリックAIに焦点を当てた国際連携との整合性を図る
  • コンソーシアム構築を支援するため、文化的・政治的アドバイスを提供する

応募条件（以下のいずれかに該当する方歓迎）:

  • 日本語および英語におけるバイカルチュラルな流暢さ（言語と文化の両面）
  • 東京大学、京都大学、慶應義塾大学、早稲田大学などの国内有名大学卒業者、あるいは同等の政策・技術分野での専門性
    （海外の大学の学位を保有していれば尚可）
  • 日本の技術・政策・研究コミュニティに関する理解、あるいはそのようなネットワークに参入・成長できるソーシャル・インテリジェンス
  • AI、地政学、公共インフラ、テクノロジー・ガバナンスの将来に対する関心
    （外交、国際技術連携、基盤モデル、G7各国のAI戦略に関する経験があれば尚可）

このフェローシップは、日本の役割を国際的なAIインフラ構築において形作るまたとない機会であり、グローバルなAI外交とインフラ戦略の最前線に立つポジションです。
国際的な技術者、政策立案者、公益団体のネットワークと連携して活動することになります。
